Janet Beauty Salon in New York City is a well-known spot for high-end men, but it’s a less well-traveled one.
And for a reason.
“There are so many different types of guys,” says Janette’s owner, who asked to be identified only by her first name, Laura.
“I think most guys like to have a little bit of an attitude about it, but not as much as the guys who have to pay the price for it.
It’s the price they pay.”
Janet Beauty is a popular haircut shop, with women and men paying between $50 and $200 for their haircuts.
They’re the type of places that people say are more expensive than they need to be, she adds.
“That’s what you see on TV.
You’re in a mall and you see all these guys with money, they’re spending it on their haircare, they have a haircut.
They’ll go home and spend it on that same haircut.”
Laura is one of those guys.
She says that she’s “just in a bit of a hurry”, so she’s a bit less cautious about paying for her hair cut at the salon.
“It’s so easy to be so frugal, and I think it’s really important to have that attitude,” she says.
“But you’re also going to make mistakes and make mistakes, and there’s no right or wrong answer.”
There’s a huge difference between the prices of hair and the prices people pay for haircuts, says Janet’s owner.
“If I see a guy with a $50 haircut, I’m not going to pay more than that,” she adds, pointing out that the price of a $200 haircut is often higher than that of a salon that’s just a hair salon.
“I don’t think there’s any reason why a guy would go to a salon and get a $500 haircut.”
Janet, a former teacher who has been working in the hair salon industry for 15 years, says that men are generally more willing to pay for a haircut than women.
But, as with any new profession, there are still risks associated with spending money at a salon.
The average cost of a haircut in New Zealand is around $60, but there are some expensive styles that are only available to women, like the ‘Sassy Haircut’ that comes in $150, plus $60 for a salon visit.
In the US, women tend to pay a higher price for their hair than men, with average prices of around $70 per cut, according to the American Association of Hairdressers and Allied Trades.
“We’re in this strange place,” says Laura, adding that she pays her own haircut fees.
“A lot of guys don’t pay for their own haircuts,” she continues.
“Some guys have their own barbers.
Some guys don, they don’t have any barbers, they just do their own.”
In some cases, women are actually paying more for their haircut than men.
In 2013, an Australian study found that women pay $20 more for a single cut than men did.
The researchers also found that men paid $50 more for an overall haircut than did women.
“Women are paid more than men for their hairstyles,” says Kelly Dominguez, the study’s lead author.
Dominguez says that, on average, men tend to be less conservative about their hair styles, so women tend not to pay as much for them.
“In the beginning, a lot of men think it might be a little more expensive, they’ll do a lot more to try and get their hair styled and they’ll spend a lot on their hair, so that’s what we saw,” she explains.
According to the International Society of Hair Care and Styling (ISSHT), the average cost for a woman’s hairstyle is about $300.
That’s not much more than the cost of having a haircut for a man, but, because the average price of hair for women is higher than for men, there’s more pressure on women to spend more.
The International Federation of Hair and Beauty Salon Directors (IFBAD) is another organisation that believes that a more conservative approach is preferable to a more frugality-driven approach.
It’s the IBFAD’s mission to encourage “the adoption of cutting-edge styling and styling products that promote personal style and beauty”.
The IBFBD also advocates for women to have their hair cut in an area that’s less crowded, and for women who work in retail and food services.
There are some things you can do to ensure that your hair isn’t getting in the way of your haircut, but these things are still the responsibility of your barber, says the IFBAD’s director of hair care, John M. Jones.
